The most
comprehensive and reliable findings to date on Americans' use
of CAM were released in May 2004 by the National Center for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Center for Health
Statistics (NCHS, part of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention). It was completed by 31,044 adults aged 18 years or
older from the U.S. civilian non institutionalized population.
The report shows 36% of adults are using some form of CAM (excluding
megavitamin therapy and prayer specifically for health reasons)
and 55% of adults believe CAM would improve health when used in
combination with conventional medical treatments.
People especially those who have been hospitalized or have had
transformational experience with their health and quality of life
in the past year, such as cancer suffers, are more likely to seek
help and guidance from CAM practitioners. Healthcare providers,
who believe in holistic care, the power of one’s body to
heal, soothe, rejuvenate, strengthen, and defend, often seek natural,
safe, high quality and effective products for their patients.
